Cardinals Intensify Their Spiritual and Pastoral Preparation at the Third General Congregation

The morning of April 24, 2025, marked the occasion of the Third General Congregation of the College of Cardinals, held in the Vatican with the presence of 113 cardinals from different continents. The meeting was held in the New Synod Hall, beginning promptly at 9:00 a.m. and concluding at noon after a half-hour break.

The meeting opened with a common prayer, a sign of unity and a willingness to listen to the Holy Spirit. During the course of the day, several cardinals who had not yet done so took the oath of fidelity in accordance with the Apostolic Constitution Universi Dominici Gregis, which governs the functioning of the Conclave and the preceding congregations.

During the session, 34 interventions were made, highlighting the concerns, hopes, and proposals facing the universal Church today. Issues related to the evangelizing mission, the cultural and social challenges of our time, and the need for a renewed witness of faith and charity were addressed.

One of the notable resolutions of the day was the election of Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández to preside over the Eucharistic celebration corresponding to the sixth day of the Novendials, the liturgical cycle of Masses celebrated after the death of a Pope.

These general congregations not only fulfill an organizational function, but are a true exercise in ecclesial communion. In them, the cardinals share their visions, listen to one another, and prepare their hearts for the eventual beginning of a conclave.

This space for fraternal dialogue and spiritual discernment reflects the commitment of the College of Cardinals to the present and future of the Church, always looking to Christ and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
