Conclave 2025: More Voters Than Ever to Elect Francis’ Successor

The Vatican recognizes the validity of the votes of all cardinals under 80 years of age, exceeding the traditional limit of 120 electors

Conclave 2025: More Voters Than Ever to Elect Francis’ Successor

On May 7, 2025, a significant event for the Catholic Church will occur: the conclave to elect the successor to Pope Francis, who has passed away. Unusually, 133 cardinals will be eligible to vote, exceeding the limit of 120 set by the Apostolic Constitution Universi Dominici Gregis.

The Holy See Press Office has confirmed the eligibility of all cardinals under the age of 80 as electors. This decision stems from dispensations granted by Pope Francis during his pontificate, during which he appointed numerous cardinals within this age range, thus broadening the representativeness of the College of Cardinals.

The official announcement followed the final general congregation before the conclave, held on April 30th. Current canon law allows for exceeding the numerical limit if the Pope has expressly authorized it or if extraordinary circumstances justify it.

This conclave is notable not only for the number of electors but also for its global composition. Cardinals from all five continents will participate, reflecting the universal nature of the Church. Prominent figures among them include Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the current Secretary of State, along with other cardinals from Europe, Asia, America, and Africa, representing diverse ecclesial backgrounds and perspectives.

In contrast, Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu, convicted of corruption in 2023, has voluntarily withdrawn from participating in the election of the new Pontiff. This decision reflects his desire to avoid any scandal or division, following letters from Pope Francis advising against his participation.

Against this backdrop, the Church prepares for a new era. The unprecedented number of electors not only reflects a shift initiated by Francis but also a greater openness to ecclesial pluralism. The world now looks to Rome, awaiting the guidance of the next leader of the Catholic Church in this new chapter.
