With the presidential elections in Poland, the future of the European Union is also at stake
An exclusive interview with Marcin Romanowski, former Deputy Minister of Justice, currently the first Polish political refugee

Minister, for many Italians what happens in Poland is little known, for others incomprehensible. How would you describe the situation in Poland under Prime Minister Donald Tusk?

Min. Marcin Romanowski: In fact, unfortunately, we can define what has been happening in Poland since December 2023 as a state of creeping illegality and a liberal autocracy. With the violation of laws and Constitutional Court rulings, the left-liberal government has forcibly taken control of public media and the prosecutor’s office. The Minister of Justice has illegally removed the presidents of many courts and appointed judges loyal to him in their place, so in criminal cases involving opposition politicians, there are manipulations in the formation of courts [which should instead be formed by drawing lots and therefore randomly]. The prosecutor’s office, illegally “occupied,” closes corruption cases against Tusk’s close collaborators and persecutes opposition politicians, arresting them on absurd charges. To destroy environments that could block the implementation of the leftist agenda, such persecutions do not only concern politicians or officials who are now imprisoned to force them to provide false and compromising accusations, but also ordinary people who react to the abuses of power.

What is currently happening in Poland should be seen as a testing ground for the struggle between globalists and defenders of national sovereignty and national identity based on Christian values. We can observe how the European establishment – previously blocking the disbursement of EU funds destined for the country and thus imposing a left-liberal government on Poland, financing leftist media and NGOs – is destroying Poland. The new administration has completely changed the policy followed by the previous conservative government, of which I was a part: for eight years (2015-23) we stopped the woke agenda, climate radicalism, and the policy of welcoming illegal migrants. The current government is cancelling large infrastructure projects, crucial for Poland’s development, but which compete with Germany: in this way, the ruling coalition, which has reached a historic low in popularity, does not keep its electoral promises, while trying to cover up its shortcomings by “settling scores” with the conservative opposition.

You are the first political refugee since 1989. What are the charges against you and why did the Hungarian government decide to grant you asylum?

In Poland, I have effectively become the victim of political and media persecution. I was arrested in violation of international law, which even forced the president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, a political colleague of Tusk from the European People’s Party, to intervene. The prosecutor’s office – immediately after its illegal “occupation” by the current government – brought against me a dozen unfounded charges. Most of them are based, for example, on the argument that I acted as deputy minister outside my competences. This is obviously nonsense because I received such powers from the minister. Furthermore, I am accused of having influenced the decisions of competition committees regarding the funding of assistance or prevention projects for victims of violence. However, according to the law, committees do not make decisions, but express opinions, and therefore such decisions were within my competence. Obviously, by a strange “coincidence,” practically all the contested projects or organizations have a Christian or conservative character. All the projects in question have been carried out, without the current government being able to accuse me of corruption or embezzlement of anything. The only “benefit” attributed to me is the personal satisfaction derived from the fact that, as a conservative and Catholic, I decided to allocate funds to projects in line with my worldview: for these “guilts” they have requested a ten-year prison sentence for me.

I am wanted in Europe with an arrest warrant. In addition, the Polish authorities asked in December last year to pursue me with an Interpol Red Notice, which in recent days has responded with a refusal. This clearly shows how an independent and reputable organization evaluates the actions of the Polish authorities. Unfortunately, the policy of Tusk’s government is undemocratic: it resembles that of the governments of Belarus or Russia.

You have become the head of a new institute in Hungary. Can you tell us about its objectives and mission, as well as your role in this institute?

At the end of April, under the auspices of one of Hungary’s leading think tanks, the Center for Fundamental Rights, the Hungarian-Polish Institute for Freedom was founded. Poland has become a crucial testing ground in the civilizational war taking place in the Western world. The attack by left-liberal elites, imposed from Brussels, is truly powerful and even strikes at the foundations: I have especially noticed this in the field of justice, for which I was responsible, where I fought for eight years against impositions, in family law, gender ideology, and the “rights” of transgender people. Now, with the Tusk government, there has been a 180-degree change. At the Institute, we want to analyze threats and illegal measures, in order to create early warning mechanisms for Hungarian society and our friends in Europe and the United States. Because we see how similar attacks affect, for example, Romania, France, and Marine Le Pen. In the United States, there was an attempt to block Donald Trump’s candidacy through a politicized judicial system. Certainly, in societies like Poland or Hungary, globalists can only gain power through lies and manipulation. That is why we want to show their true face and expose their actions.

On May 18, presidential elections will be held in Poland. What would it mean for Poland if Rafał Trzaskowski, vice president of Tusk’s Civic Platform party, wins?

These elections are truly crucial. In the Polish system, the president has the right of veto in the legislative process, which can only be overridden by a 3/5 majority of votes: a majority that the current left-liberal coalition does not have. To carry out their entire agenda, the current Polish rulers therefore need a president from their own camp, such as the globalist, Soros protégé, Rafał Trzaskowski. He is the right candidate for them, since – as mayor of Warsaw – he has actively promoted the woke ideology for many years. For electoral purposes, he presents himself as a Catholic and moderate conservative, which, of course, is false.

To win the presidential elections, the Tusk regime already last year blocked all public subsidies due to the opposition PiS party. In the Polish reality, this represents 80% of the funds available to a political party. In this way, they tried to eliminate from the electoral competition the largest opposition party supporting the candidacy of Karol Nawrocki. But, thanks to the incredible generosity of ordinary people, Nawrocki nevertheless managed to carry out an effective political campaign.

What consequences would the victory of the left-liberal camp in Poland have for other European Union countries, including Italy?

Poland is currently a testing ground to see how to “annihilate” a nation and a state with a strong Christian identity and a great attachment to independence. If the left-liberal coalition were to win the presidential elections, the elimination of the opposition in Poland would be a matter of months. The next target would then be Hungary, where parliamentary elections will be held next year and where Brussels is trying to impose its own puppet, just as happened with Tusk. For the left-liberal establishment, which currently governs Europe in a centralized and corrupt manner, all this serves to maintain power by eliminating any opposition.
