Holy See: Canonization of Carlo Acutis Postponed

The Vatican postpones the ceremony that would have made Carlo Acutis the first millennial saint without a date

Holy See: Canonization of Carlo Acutis Postponed

The Vatican has confirmed the suspension of Carlo Acutis’s canonization, originally scheduled for this Sunday, April 27, due to Pope Francis’s death. The news has shaken the global Catholic community, not only because of the loss of Peter’s successor, but also because of the postponement of a canonization that many had awaited with great hope and emotion.

A Young Saint for Digital Times

Carlo Acutis, who died in 2006 at the age of 15, is remembered as a deeply devout teenager passionate about technology, who was able to combine his love for the Eucharist with his ability to evangelize online. His beatification in 2020 made him a role model for new generations, and his canonization would have consecrated him as the first millennial saint in history.

His story, his joy, and his simple faith have moved young people and adults around the world. Therefore, the Vatican’s announcement to postpone the ceremony indefinitely has generated a mixture of sadness, understanding, and prayer.

Hope Lives On

Although the liturgical calendar has come to a standstill, devotion to Carlo Acutis has not. Thousands of faithful have expressed on social media and in spontaneous pilgrimages their hope that the process will soon resume and that this canonization can be celebrated with all the solemnity and peace it deserves.

The Holy See has asked for prayer and unity in light of these events. Carlo’s body, on display in Assisi, continues to receive visitors and witnesses of spiritual miracles who attribute them to his intercession.

A Providential Pause

Amidst the mourning for Pope Francis, young Acutis continues to remind us that “always being united to Jesus, that is my plan of life.” The Church now sees it as a sign of hope, while waiting for a new successor of Peter to take up the definitive gesture that will inscribe him among the canon of saints.
