How to Live Summer with Faith (with Family and Without Looking Like Martians)
Rest, enjoy, and follow Jesus amidst ice cream, excursions, and family dinners. Because summer is no excuse to disconnect from faith... or from good humor

Summer is here: heat, vacations, less rushing… And faith? Well, just like always, but with flip-flops. It’s not about reciting litanies on the beach or seeming like a lost mystic, but about living our faith with simplicity and joy, wherever we are and with whomever we are. As Pope Francis says, Christians don’t act like they simply live consistently.
1. Prayer also has daylight saving time
Prayer doesn’t disappear in summer; it just changes location and format. Why not pray when you wake up, looking out at the sea? Or bless the food at the beach bar (without making a fuss)? God is where we are. And if the children get tired, a simple “Thank you, Lord, for this beautiful day (and for the vacation)” is enough.
2. Witness without speeches (with simple gestures)
In the summer, we’re more relaxed, but not on a spiritual vacation. It’s enough to continue being kind, helping out at home, speaking well of others, listening patiently… Small details that speak of God without shouting his name. As St. Francis of Assisi said: “Always preach, and if necessary, use words.”
3. Family plans where God is present
-
Nature walks invite you to admire creation. No need to deliver an ecological sermon; just say, “What wonderful things God has made!”
-
Visit a beautiful church wherever you are: go in, be silent, admire the sacred art, and, if appropriate, pray a little.
-
Sunday Mass, even if we’re away: Finding a local parish can be quite an adventure… And meeting other believers can be a pleasant surprise!
4. Conversations that leave a mark
Vacations are a great time to talk as a family: about life, dreams, doubts… and also about faith. Without forcing, without lecturing. Simply sharing what we feel inside. And listening a lot.
5. Help when the opportunity arises
Sometimes in the summer we have more time to look out for others: maybe help that elderly neighbor who’s lonely, help with a food drive, or simply be more patient with family (which isn’t always easy when it’s 35 degrees).
6. Enjoy… Without regrets!
Faith is not the enemy of healthy enjoyment. We can have fun, laugh, relax, and unwind from stress. Saint John Bosco said, “A sad saint is a sad saint.” So, joy and a sense of humor!
Summer can be a gift for our spiritual lives. We just need to stay connected to God, live consistently, and enjoy family time as a blessing. The key is simplicity, living our faith naturally, without labels or awkwardness. And at the end of summer, we’re sure to take away not only photos and memories… but also a slightly fuller heart.
