Justice: What’s Right, Always
Looking for a more humane work environment? Start by being fair in the big and small things

Justice is one of those virtues we all recognize as fundamental, but which often eludes us in small, everyday gestures. It’s not limited to judges and courts: at work, justice translates into giving everyone what they deserve, treating colleagues, superiors, and subordinates fairly, recognizing the merits of others without jealousy, correcting with charity, and always acting with integrity, even when no one is watching. It is a profoundly active virtue, which demands attention to others, respect for the truth, and the courage to act rightly.
A fair worker is transparent in their decisions, delivers on their promises, doesn’t appropriate the work of others, and shows no partiality. They treat those they like equally to those they find difficult. They respect schedules, procedures, and the people behind each task. Likewise, they don’t use their position for personal gain or accept favoritism. Their authority, if they have it, doesn’t oppress, but rather elevates. And if they’re part of a team, they’re the colleague everyone values because they can always be relied upon.
From a Christian perspective, justice is not only about complying with external norms, but also about acting from God’s heart. The Gospel reminds us that being is not only about avoiding evil, but also about actively doing good. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled” (Matthew 5:6). Jesus calls us to live a justice that goes beyond legal minimums, that seeks to restore broken relationships, that defends the weak, and that sows peace. In the workplace, this may mean intervening in the face of injustice, recognizing the invisible efforts of others, or asking for forgiveness for a mistake.
This virtue also has a direct impact on the culture of a company or institution. Where there is justice, trust flourishes. Conflicts are reduced, motivation increases, and human bonds are strengthened. Because we all need to feel that we are valued fairly, that our efforts count, that we are not being used, and that our difficulties are understood. A fair environment is one where everyone can grow, contribute, and be themselves with freedom and dignity.
So don’t underestimate the importance of justice in your daily work. Practice it with firmness and delicacy. Don’t settle for “doing no wrong” if you don’t decide every day to “do good with justice.” Being fair will make you a better professional, but also a better Christian. And little by little, with your concrete decisions, you will be helping to build a more just, more humane workplace… and one more like the Kingdom of God.
