Papal appointments in Peru and Ecuador were announced Saturday by the Vatican.

Resignation and appointment of bishop of Cajamarca, Peru

The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the diocese of Cajamarca, Peru, presented by Bishop José Carmelo Martínez Lázaro, O.A.R.

The Holy Father has appointed the Reverend Fr. Isaac-C. Martínez Chuquizana, M.S.A., head of formation of the Peru-Brazil Delegation of the Missionaries of the Holy Apostles.

Msgr. Isaac-C. Martínez Chuquizana, M.S.A., was born on 1 January 1954 in Huarochirí, Lima Region, Peru, where he attended primary and secondary school, obtaining a degree in agricultural technology in 1970.

In 1975 he entered the Congregation of the Missionaries of the Holy Apostles and from 1971 to 1976 he studied philosophy and theology at the Pontifical and Civil Faculty of Theology in Lima. He gave his solemn vows on 21 August 1978 and was ordained a priest on 1 May 1979.

He has held the following posts: rector and head of Formation in the Seminary of the Missionaries of the Holy Apostles in Peru (1982-1989); parish priest in Pevas, apostolic vicariate of San José del Amazonas, Peru (1986-1987); licentiate in missionology in Ottawa, Canada (1989-1991); general counselor and head of formation (1991-1995), secretary-general (1995-2006) and superior general, for two five-year terms, of the Missionaries of the Holy Apostles, Montreal (2007-2017); international spiritual director of the Foi et Lumière Movement (2009-2020); and general delegate of its Congregation for Foreign Missions, with an itinerant presence in Vietnam, Indonesia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (2017-2020).


To date, he has been in charge of formation for the Peru-Brazil Delegation of the Missionaries of the Holy Apostles.

In addition to Spanish, he speaks English and French.

Appointment of auxiliary of the metropolitan archdiocese of Guayaquil, Ecuador

The Holy Father has appointed the Reverend Gerardo Miguel Nieves Loja, of the clergy of the diocese of Riobamba and until now parish priest, as titular bishop of Tigisis in Numidia and auxiliary of the metropolitan archdiocese of Guayaquil (Ecuador).

Msgr. Gerardo Miguel Nieves Loja was born on 13 June 1963 in El Valle, metropolitan archdiocese of Cuenca. He completed his ecclesiastical studies in the seminary of Cuenca and in that of the Misioneros Javerianos de Yarumal. He obtained a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Strasbourg.

He was ordained a priest on 12 December 1993, for the Institute for Foreign Missions in Yarumal. After a period of missionary work in Cameroon (1994-1996) he returned to Ecuador where he was incardinated in the diocese of Riobamba. He has held the following positions: professor and rector of the diocesan seminary, professor at the Universidad Nacional de Chimborazo, coordinator of the diocesan youth ministry, vicar general, and parish priest of several parishes.
