Pope Francis made appointments in Spain and France. They were announced Wednesday, February 16, 2022, by the Vatican.

Appointment of auxiliary bishop of the diocese of Islas Canarias, Spain

The Holy Father has appointed the Reverend Cristóbal Déniz Hernández, of the clergy of Islas Canarias, Spain, and vicar general, as auxiliary bishop of the same diocese, assigning him the titular see of Aliezira.

Curriculum vitae

Msgr. Cristóbal Déniz Hernández was born in Valsequillo, on the island of Gran Canaria, on June 15, 1969. He was ordained a priest on September 22, 1996. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in theology at the Las Palmas Theological Institute in 1995. In 1997 he was awarded a licentiate in moral theology from the Alphonsianum Academy in Rome and in 2006 a doctorate in moral theology from the same Academy. In the same year, he also studied bioethics at the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum in Rome.

After priestly ordination he served as director of the diocesan Secretariat for Youth Pastoral Care (1998-2001), professor of moral theology at the Higher Institute of Theology of the Canary Islands (1998-2021) and director of the same Institute (2013-2019), vice rector of the diocesan seminary (2001-2004 and 2007-2008), parish priest of Santa Rita de Cassia in Ojos de Garza (2006-2007), parish priest of San Antonio Abad in Tamaraceite (2008-2013), parish priest of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves in Huertas del Palmar and collaborator at the Nuestra Señora del Pino Shrine in Teror (2013-2015), parish priest of San Nicolás de Bari and San Francisco de Sales in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (2015-2016), and episcopal vicar of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (2014-2019). Since 2019 he has served as canon of the Cathedral and parish priest of Santísimo Cristo Crucificado de Guanarteme and, since 2021, vicar general.


 

Appointment of bishop of Le Puy-en-Velay, France

The Holy Father has appointed the Reverend Yves Baumgarten of the clergy of the archdiocese of Lyon, until now responsible for the parishes of Pouilly-sous-Charlieu, as bishop of Le Puy-en-Velay, France.

Curriculum vitae

Msgr. Yves Baumgarten was born on September 28, 1964 in Mâcon in the diocese of Autun. After obtaining a licentiate in economics, he exercised the profession of tax inspector for eight years. He subsequently completed the first cycle of ecclesiastical studies in the preparatory seminary of Paray-le-Monial, and the second in the Seminary of Lyon. On June 27, 2004, he was ordained a priest for the archdiocese of Lyon.

He has held the following offices: vicar of the Saint-Paul parish in Roanne (2004-2005), parish priest of Notre-Dame des Côteaux du Levant in Balbigny and chaplain of Roanne Hospital (2005-2012), parish priest at Sacré-Cœur in Lyon and moderator of the diocesan Curia (2014-2020). Since 2020, he has been responsible for the parishes of Pouilly-sous-Charlieu.
