Pope Francis made several appointments in Poland, announced March 10, 2022, by the Vatican.

Appointment of the Coadjutor Bishop of Koszalin-Kołobrzeg (Poland)

The Holy Father has appointed HE Mgr. Zbigniew Zieliński as Coadjutor Bishop of the Diocese of Koszalin-Kołobrzeg (Poland), transferring him from the titular see of Medeli and from the office of Auxiliary of the Archdiocese of Gdańsk.

HE Msgr. Zbigniew Zieliński was born on January 14, 1965 in Gdańsk. After having completed his philosophical-theological studies at the Major Seminary of Gdańsk, on 18 May 1991 he received priestly ordination for the same Archdiocese.

In 1995 he continued his studies at the Academy of Catholic Theology in Warsaw (currently Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University ) where in 2004 he obtained a Doctorate in Sociology.

He held the following positions: from 1991 to 1999 he was Vicar in the Parish of Our Lady of Sorrows in Gdańsk and from 1999 to 2000 in the Cathedral of SS. Trinity in Gdańsk-Oliwa; from 2000 to 2008 he was Director of the Department for Pastoral Care of the Curia and since 2007 he has been chaplain of His Holiness. From 2004 to 2006 he was professor of Sociology of Religion at the Gdańsk State University; from 2004 to 2007 pastor of the Parish of St. Michael the Archangel in Sopot and from 2007 to 2014 of the Cathedral in Gdańsk-Oliwa; in 2014-2015, pastor of the Co-Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Gdańsk.

On 26 September 2015 he was appointed titular bishop of Medeli and auxiliary of the archdiocese of Gdańsk, receiving episcopal consecration on the following 24 October.

Within the Polish Episcopal Conference, the Prelate is a Member of the Council for Social Affairs.

Resignation of Auxiliary Bishop of Kraków (Poland)

The Holy Father accepted the resignation from the office of Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Kraków (Poland) presented by HE Mgr. Jan Szkodoń.

Appointment of Auxiliary Bishop of Wrocław (Poland)

The Holy Father has appointed as Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Wrocław (Poland) the Rev. Maciej Małyga, of the clergy of the same Archdiocese, currently Episcopal Vicar for the Ongoing Formation of the Clergy, assigning him the titular See of Ulcinj.


HE Mgr. Maciej Małyga was born on 11 May 1979 in Środa Śląska in the Archdiocese of Wrocław. After his philosophical-theological studies at the major seminary of Wrocław he received priestly ordination on 22 May 2004 for the same archdiocese.

From 2004 to 2006 he was Vicar in the Parish of St. John in Oleśnica and from 2006 to 2012 he completed his studies at the University of Freiburg in Breisgau, where he obtained a doctorate in Fundamental Theology.

Back in the diocese, he became a spiritual father at the major seminary of Wrocław. In 2019 he was appointed Episcopal Vicar for Ongoing Formation of the Clergy, elected Member of the Presbyteral Council, and became Director of the House of Ongoing Formation for the Clergy.

In 2021 he was also appointed Spiritual Father of the Diocesan Preparatory Seminary.
