Pope Leo XIV will canonize Carlo Acutis and Pier Giorgio Frassati on September 7

The Office for Liturgical Celebrations of the Supreme Pontiff announced that on Friday morning, June 13, at 9:00 a.m., in the Consistory Hall of the Vatican Apostolic Palace, Pope Leo XIV presided over the celebration of the Third Hour and the Ordinary Public Consistory for the Canonization of Certain Blessed.

During the Consistory, the Pope decreed that Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, along with Blessed Carlo Acutis, will be inscribed in the Register of Saints on Sunday, September 7, 2025; while Blessed Ignazio Choukrallah Maloyan, Peter To Rot, Vincenza Maria Poloni, Maria del Monte Carmelo Rendiles Martinez, Maria Troncatti, José Gregorio Hernandez Cisneros, and Bartolo Longo will be inscribed in the Register of Saints on Sunday, October 19, 2025.

Acutis and Frassati will be saints together

Following the death of Pope Francis on April 21, the canonization dates for the two young men changed. In fact, it was Jorge Mario Bergoglio who announced the canonization of Acutis and Frassati at the General Audience on November 20 of last year, prompting thunderous applause in St. Peter’s Square that day. For Acutis, beatified in Assisi on October 10, 2020, the date had been set for April 27, the Second Sunday of Easter, also known as the Sunday of Divine Mercy, within the framework of the Jubilee for Adolescents. Frassati was reportedly proclaimed a saint during the Jubilee for Youth, which ran from July 28 to August 3. On the day of the Argentine Pope’s death, the suspension of the canonization ceremony for young Charles had been announced; no concrete information has yet been received regarding Frassati.

Today, however, the announcement of the date, along with the novelty of Pope Leo XIV’s symbolic choice to inscribe these two young figures in the register of saints on the same day. These two young figures, from different eras and with completely different experiences, but united by a strong love for Christ and the ability to transmit it to all those who had the opportunity to cross their paths, are being announced.

Seven Blessed Canonized on October 19

In today’s Consistory, the Pope also set Sunday, October 19, as the date for the canonization of seven other Blessed. These are the martyrs Ignatius Choukrallah Maloyan, Armenian Catholic Archbishop of Mardin, who died during the 1915 genocide, and Peter To Rot, a layman and catechist, murdered in 1945 for continuing his apostolate despite the ban imposed by the Japanese. He will be the first saint from Papua New Guinea. Then came Vincenza Maria Poloni, founder of the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of Verona; Maria del Monte Carmelo Rendiles Martinez, founder of the Congregation of the Servants of Jesus; and Maria Troncatti, a professed nun of the Congregation of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians.

Also on October 19, two lay people will be canonized: José Gregorio Hernández Cisneros, a Venezuelan doctor and member of the Secular Franciscan Order, known as “the doctor of the poor,” to whom he provided care and even paid for their medicines; and Bartolo Longo, founder of the Sanctuary of Pompeii, a beloved figure in Italy and around the world.
