The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the diocese of Orihuela-Alicante, Spain, presented by Bishop Jesús Murgui Soriano.

The Holy Father has appointed Bishop José Ignacio Munilla Aguirre as bishop of the diocese of Orihuela-Alicante, Spain, transferring him from the see of San Sebastián.

Bishop José Ignacio Munilla Aguirre was born on 13 November 1961 in Zumárraga, Guipúzcoa, diocese of San Sebastián. He carried out his ecclesiastical studies in the major seminary of Toledo, obtaining a licentiate in spiritual theology at the Facultad de Teología del Norte de España, Burgos.

He was ordained a priest on 29 June 1986 for the diocese of San Sebastián. From 1986 to 1990 served as coadjutor of the parish of Asunción, and from 1990 to 2006, as parish priest of El Salvador.


He was appointed as bishop of Palencia on 24 June 2006, and was consecrated the following 10 September. On 21 November 2009 he was appointed as bishop of San Sebastián. Within the Spanish Episcopal Conference he has served as a member of the Episcopal Commission for Consecrated Life (2006-2008), for the Lay Apostolate (2008-2013), and for Social Communications Media (2011-2017). Since March 2020 he has been a member of the Episcopal Commission for Social Communications.

The Holy Father has appointed as bishop of the diocese of Coria-Cáceres, Spain, the Reverend Jesús Pulido Arriero, of the clergy of Toledo and member of the Fraternity of Diocesan Worker Priests of the Heart of Jesus, until now technical secretary of the Episcopal Commission for the Doctrine of the Faith of the Spanish Episcopal Conference, and director of the BAC publishing house.

Msgr. Jesús Pulido Arriero was born in Toledo on 21 February 1965. He carried out his philosophical and theological studies at the Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca. In 1990 he was awarded a licentiate in sacred Scripture from the Pontifical Biblical Institute and a doctorate in spiritual theology at the Pontifical Theological Faculty – Pontifical Institute of Spirituality “Teresianum”.

He has held the following offices: director of the Sigueme publishing hosue of Salamanca (1990-1999), deputy director of the Saint James the Apostle College of Bavaria (1999), vice rector of the Spanish College in Rome (2000-2002), secretary general (2002-2014) and vice director (2008-2014) of the Fraternity of Diocesan Worker Priests of the Heart of Jesus, official of the Section for General Affairs of the Secretariat of State (2013-2015), vice rector of the Venezuelan College of Rome (2014-2015), vice rector of the San Carlos y San Ambrosio Seminary of Havana in Cuba (2015-2016), director of the BAC publishing house since 2016, and technical secretary of the Episcopal Commission for the Doctrine of the Faith of the Spanish Episcopal Conference.
