Technology with a Human Face: Pope Francis’ Call for Ethical and Caring Use
The Pontiff warns of the risks of technology when it deviates from the common good and emphasizes the need for it to serve all of humanity, without excluding the most vulnerable
A Technological Future at the Service of All
In a world where innovation is advancing by leaps and bounds, Pope Francis has once again focused on a fundamental issue: technology must serve the person and not become a privilege of a few. In his message for April, the Holy Father stressed the importance of technological development respecting human dignity and contributing to reducing inequalities rather than deepening them.
More Connection, Less Humanity
The Pontiff noted with concern how technology often isolates us instead of fostering authentic human relationships. “If we spend more time looking at a screen than interacting with those around us, we have a problem,” he warned. For Francis, the challenge is not only to guarantee access to technology but also to ensure that its use fosters encounters between people and does not distance them.
Shared Responsibility in the Digital Age
Francis called on governments, businesses, and civil society to promote technological development that does not leave the most disadvantaged behind. He insisted that innovations must be oriented toward the common good and respond to current crises, such as climate change and poverty, rather than being used solely for commercial or power-seeking purposes.
A Call to Ethics and Justice
In a global context in which artificial intelligence and automation are redefining society, the Pope recalled that true progress is not measured solely by scientific advances, but by its capacity to improve the lives of all, especially the most vulnerable. “We cannot allow technology to be an instrument of exclusion,” he affirmed.
In this way, Francis invites us to reflect on how every innovation can contribute to a more just and humane world, where no one is left out of development.
