From the Holy See Press Office, Press Conference to present the first stage of the itineraries of art and faith of the pastoral activities of St Peter’s Basilica: the event “Follow me. The life of Peter”. The videomapping narrating the life of St Peter.

The videomapping “Follow me. The life of Peter” will be projected for the first time on the façade of St Peter’s Basilica on 2 October at 9 pm. The aim is to encourage pilgrims and visitors to get to know the humanity and spirituality of the Apostle.

THE CONTEXT
The videomapping depicting the life of St. Peter will be screened for the first time on the façade of St. Peter’s Basilica on 2nd October at 9 pm.
Follow me. The life of Peter marks the first leg of the “Art and Faith” itineraries of the pastoral activities of St. Peter’s Basilica.  The videomapping artistically opens a pastoral path to accompany the visit to the Basilica and the pilgrimage to the Tomb of Peter, with the cooperation of St. Peter’s Chapter, St. Peter’s Parish, the Fabric of Saint Peter and the Fratelli tutti Foundation, according to their own specificities.  From the proposal of a calendar of lectiones Petri to the spiritual itineraries in the Petrine places of the city of Rome, from the contemplation of a “via Petri” to the daily prayer on the Apostole’s tomb, this Path will offer visitors a variety of opportunities to announce and meet face to face with the Petrine figure deepening and meditating upon his human and spiritual experience. Thus people will be accompanied by the example of Simon Peter to fully live the encounter with the Lord and with their brothers and sisters; so that they may live the pilgrims’ experience to the Tomb and to the heart of Christianity, recognize themselves as brothers and sisters and leave renewed.

FOLLOW ME. THE LIFE OF ST. PETER
When in the world one hears about St. Peter’s one often thinks of the Vatican Basilica, the most imposing and famous in the world, but one hardly ever remembers the man to whom it is dedicated.  The videomapping project starts from here, from the figure of Simon, whose name Christ even changed, and intends to answer some simple questions: who was he? What do we know about him?

The chosen scenes narrate in the first person the highlights of the apostle Peter’s life: the call, the following, the mission, the martyrdom. The façade of the Basilica, in addition to being one of the most evocative screens in the world for this narrative project, is designed as an integral part of the story to celebrate the Apostle’s testimony at the altar of Confession.

The project narrates the life of Peter through a sequence of images taken from the most important iconographic repertories of the Basilica and the Vatican Museums. High-tech tools designed to enhance and harmonize images, sounds and words were chosen to realize this narrative.  From a technical point of view, videomapping proposes an unprecedented marriage between new technologies and the iconography related to the artistic heritage of the Fabric of Saint Peter and the Vatican Museums. A combination of ancient and modern that employs 3-D production technologies to enhance the artistic masterpieces of the Basilica and the Vatican Museums by artists such as Raphael, Perugino, Reni and Cavallucci. The videomapping projection equipment is placed on the arms of the Colonnade in order not to disrupt the life of the Piazza and the ordinary flow of the faithful.  The faithful, pilgrims and visitors from all over the world can enter into dialogue with the humanity of the Apostle and delve into the depths of the spiritual experience by retracing the main steps of the extraordinary life of the fisherman of Galilee – the ups and downs, the tenacity and the doubts, the tears and the gift of life – thus having the opportunity to recognize and identify themselves in his life experience.

In the sequence of images, objects belonging to the daily toil and labour, such as the net and the boat, are proposed as symbols of the Church and Christian life. The moments chosen are part of an accomplished vocation, that of Peter, cherished within a greater love that continues to ask men and women of all times:  “Do you love me?”. From the Paschal perspective that emerges from Peter’s experience, even doubts and
betrayals are the condition to meet, love and serve the Lord and their brothers and sisters.
