Opus Dei presents its new Statutes to the Vatican after three years of work and consultation
The Prelature submits the revised text to the Dicastery for the Clergy, as part of the process of adapting it to the Motu Proprio Ad Charisma Tuendum

At a particularly significant moment for the Work—the 50th anniversary of the death of St. Josemaría Escrivá—Opus Dei presented the revised text of its Statutes to the Vatican today, June 11, 2025, concluding a process that began in 2022 following Pope Francis’ Motu Proprio Ad Charisma Tuendum.
This was communicated by the Prelate of Opus Dei, Monsignor Fernando Ocáriz, in a message addressed to the faithful of the Prelature. In it, he expressed his gratitude for the spirit of communion, reflection, and prayer with which this ecclesial process has been experienced, which aimed to legally adapt the figure of Opus Dei to the new provisions established by the Holy See.
The journey leading to this release has included several key phases: an extensive internal consultation process with the faithful of the Work, an Extraordinary General Congress held in April 2023, and a subsequent period of technical and doctrinal dialogue with the Dicastery for the Clergy. Furthermore, development was affected by the modification of canons 295 and 296 of the Code of Canon Law and, more recently, by the vacancy of the See following the death of Pope Francis.
In his message, Bishop Ocáriz noted that, although the process could not be concluded within the General Congress due to the extraordinary situation in the Church, the congressmen authorized its subsequent completion with the newly established governing bodies. Thus, the text has been officially submitted for review by the competent Dicastery.
“The Prelature awaits the Holy See’s response,” the Prelate stated, while encouraging everyone to continue entrusting this journey to the Holy Trinity, especially within the framework of this very symbolic year for the Opus Dei family.
With the approval of the new Statutes, it is hoped that the institution’s charismatic character will be legally consolidated, reinforcing its evangelizing mission in fidelity to the founding spirit of St. Josemaría.
Don Fernando Ocáriz: “It has been a three-year journey, accompanied by everyone’s prayers, which I ask you to intensify in this final stage. Naturally, let us continue to accompany the Holy Father Leo XIV with our daily prayers and dedication.“
