Today the conclave begins: What can we Catholics do?
Pray, trust, and walk with Peter: the role of the faithful in the election of the new Pope

A momentous moment for the Catholic Church began today in the Vatican: the conclave to elect Pope Francis’s successor. The cardinal electors will meet in the Sistine Chapel, in a profound atmosphere of prayer and discernment, to entrust to the Holy Spirit the decision that will mark the course of the Church in the coming years.
Although the cardinals carry out the election process, all Catholics are called to actively participate in this event through a powerful and accessible tool: prayer. Since ancient times, the People of God have understood that the election of the Vicar of Christ on Earth is not only a matter of votes and deliberation, but an authentic act of faith, in which the Holy Spirit guides the cardinals to elect the pastor the Church needs at each historical moment.
Unite in Prayer: The Power of the Simple
At times like this, the entire Church is invited to join spiritually in the conclave. It doesn’t matter whether one is in a large city or a small town, in a cathedral or a humble chapel; the prayer of the simple rises with equal force. Saint John Paul II, on more than one occasion, recalled that the strength of the Church lies in the praying hearts of its faithful.
The saints have always understood this truth with special clarity. Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus, in her hidden life in the convent, offered every sacrifice for the missionaries and for the Church. Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, from his cell in San Giovanni Rotondo, constantly interceded for the Pope and for the conversion of hearts. In them, we see reflected the strength of a simple but deeply rooted faith.
In this sense, we can unite in a concrete way through:
- Praying the Rosary, asking for the intercession of the Virgin Mary that the cardinals may be docile to the Holy Spirit.
- Offer sacrifices and small mortifications, placing our daily efforts in God’s hands.
- Attend Holy Mass, uniting ourselves to Christ’s sacrifice and praying for the unity and holiness of the Church.
- Participate in Eucharistic adoration, trusting that Jesus, present in the Tabernacle, guides the destiny of his Church.
The silence of the Sistine Chapel: an echo of universal prayer
In the Sistine Chapel, the cardinal electors remain isolated from the outside world. No phones, no social media, no external communication of any kind. This profound silence is not a mere formality, but a spiritual disposition to listen to the voice of God without distractions. In this atmosphere of recollection, the prayers of millions of faithful from around the world become an invisible echo that sustains and strengthens the cardinals.
In 2005, during the conclave that elected Pope Benedict XVI, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger shared that he felt the support of the prayers of the universal Church. “We were not alone,” he stated in a subsequent interview. “We felt the whole Church praying for us.” These words remind us that our prayer has real weight, a spiritual echo that transcends walls and distances.
Looking to the Future with Hope
The conclave is not only an election event, but a sign of communion and hope for Catholics. We trust that the next Pope will be a pastor after the heart of Christ, capable of guiding the Church along paths of fidelity and love.
In this time of waiting, every Catholic has a fundamental role: to pray, trust, and live their faith more intensely. As Saint Teresa of Calcutta said, “I do what you cannot, you do what I cannot, and together we accomplish great things.” From our families, parishes, and communities, we can be a silent but firm pillar that supports the conclave.
The Sign of the White Smoke: A New Beginning
Finally, when the white smoke rises over the sky of Rome, it will be a sign of hope for all the faithful. No matter who is elected, we know that it is the Holy Spirit who guides his choice. At that moment, the new Pope will step onto the balcony to bless the universal Church, and we, as members of the Body of Christ, will renew our faith and trust in the Church.
Because today, more than ever, the Church needs each one of us, our faith, and our prayers. And so, when the white smoke finally appears, we will know that our small but powerful contribution has been part of the great miracle of the election of Peter’s successor.
The Conclave Unites Us in Faith
This day is a call to strengthen our unity and our trust in God. The Conclave is not just an event that takes place in Rome; it is an event that invites us to live communion and faith throughout the world. From every corner, every prayer counts, every Rosary matters, and every Mass celebrated for the intention of the next Pope is a demonstration of love for the Church.
Today the Conclave begins, and with it, a new stage for the Catholic Church. May our prayers be the invisible breath that sustains the Cardinals in their mission. Because united in Christ, we build the Church He envisioned.
Prayer
Lord God, we ask you with humility and trust to guide your servants, the Cardinals, at this moment of profound responsibility. May the Holy Spirit enlighten their hearts and minds, giving them wisdom and discernment to choose the Pope who will lead your Church according to your will. Lord, strengthen their faith and grant them unity in their decision. May the new Pope be a shepherd according to the heart of Christ, faithful to your word and generous in his love for humanity. We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
