The historic visit marked the first official meeting between the Belgian monarchs and the pontiff, which had been postponed twice due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The meeting was described as “very positive” by both sides, as it is an important step in relations between Belgium and the Holy See.

Pope Francis thanked the King and Queen of Belgium for their visit and expressed his desire to continue working with them to promote peace and cooperation in the world.

At the end of the audience, the Belgian monarchs visited St. Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel.

This morning at the Vatican Apostolic Palace, the Holy Father Francis received in audience His Majesty King Philippe of Belgium and his consort, Her Majesty Queen Mathilde, who later met with His Excellency Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States and International Organisations.


During cordial talks at the Secretariat of State, they welcomed the good relations between the Holy See and Belgium, stressing the role of the Christian faith and the Catholic Church.

They then discussed matters of common interest and international affairs, with particular reference to Africa and the war in Ukraine and the commitment to peace between peoples.
