Rome unites in prayer: the world bids farewell to Pope Francis with love and gratitude
Thousands of faithful flock to Rome to bid farewell to Pope Francis, in a farewell marked by prayer, gratitude, and a profound unity of the universal Church

Under the luminous sky of Rome, thousands of faithful from all corners of the world gather in St. Peter’s Square to pay homage to Pope Francis, who departed for the House of the Father on April 21. The lines stretch from the Via della Conciliazione to the heart of the Vatican, where the Pontiff’s body lies in the Basilica, dressed simply, just as he wished. The respectful silence is intertwined with prayers and tears, in a moving testimony of love and gratitude.
“I had to come to say goodbye to a man who taught me to look at others with compassion,” says a young pilgrim, holding a rosary in her hands. At his side, an elderly man murmurs: “He always smiled, even in illness. His joy was contagious.”
Francis, the Pope who chose to live in Casa Santa Marta and wear black shoes instead of the traditional red ones, will be buried in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, fulfilling his wish for humility and closeness to the people. An anonymous benefactor, according to his will, will cover the funeral expenses, a gesture that reflects the generosity and love he inspired during his pontificate.
Since Wednesday, St. Peter’s Basilica has opened its doors so that the faithful can bid farewell to the Holy Father. On Friday, April 25, the coffin will be closed, and on Saturday, April 26, the Funeral Mass will be celebrated on the esplanade of the Basilica. From then on, the “novendiales” will begin, nine days of Masses in remembrance of Pope Francis, presided over by various cardinals and open to all who wish to participate.
Francis’s death has sparked a wave of pilgrimages to Rome. Hotels and flights have increased their prices due to high demand, and travel agencies are organizing groups to attend both the funeral and the Jubilee Year, which runs until January 2026.
In this time of grief, the Church is more united than ever. Francis’ words and actions have left an indelible mark on millions of hearts. His legacy of humility, compassion, and openness continues to guide the Catholic community toward a future of hope and fraternity.
